Last year, the story of Jasmina Ristic, a Chicago woman struggling with cancer whose cat Spodee offered needed love and support, inspired a partnership between Purina Cat Chow and the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure.
Ristic’s story is featured with other Stories of Hope. “Once my treatment began, I struggled to cope with the pain and exhaustion. But somehow my cat, Spodee, knew I was suffering. It didn’t make sense. There was no way for her to know. But she just did,” she writes. “She snuggled up with …

Curious about cats? Here are a few cat facts to scratch your curiosity:
The reason why Siamese cats have a dark mask and dark tips to their feet and tails is because of a gene which causes a reaction, making colder regions grow dark hair.
Parent cats will sometimes bring maimed animals to their kittens so they can practice their hunting skills under supervision.

A Letter From Bett Sundermeyer,
Everyone,
BARC (Houston ’s animal control or city pound) is overflowing with cats/kittens (it is kitten season). Euthanasia is at an alarming rate to make room for more. You can help stop this by fostering a cat or litter. BARC doesn’t want to keep litters because it takes several weeks for them to be big enough to spay/neuter and adopt out.
Your bathroom or laundry room could save lots of tiny lives. If it’s a nursing litter, the momma cat will do most of the work. All you need to provide is a safe spot and some food and water.

NOTHING SAYS I LOVE YOU, LIKE A LITTLE NIP, TUCK
Houston Humane Society Provides Free Neutering for Cats on Feb. 11
Show your cat you love him this Valentine’s, by helping him live a longer, healthier life. On Wednesday, February 11, 2009 the Houston Humane Society will provide a free neuter to the first 500 male cats which are brought to the shelter at 14700 Almeda Road. That’s a regular service fee of $40.00.
Animal overpopulation remains a community issue in Houston. Every day, 70,000 puppies and kitties are born to pets, which have not been spayed or neutered. This Valentine’s, the Houston Humane Society and pet owners can show what big hearts they have by helping keep the problem in check.

Jack Byrnes would be proud. The uptight character played by Robert De Niro in Meet The Parents made us laugh at the very idea of toilet training his cat, Mr. Jinx. In one comedic turn, Byrnes popularized something all cat lovers universally wish they could do: rescue their furry friends from the evils of litter - the odor, the clean up, the cost. Now, a quirky new gift book arrives in stores to offer felines a nine-step program for leaving litter behind.
Combining ironic humor with an utterly practical guide, ‘KiCK LiTTER: Nine-Step Program for Recovering Litter Addicts’ (November 2008, CDA Press) follows the adventures of two cats, Moxie and Cooper (and the big guy who feeds them), taking their message of recovery from litter addiction to the masses.
