Join us for our Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, October 5, 2013. Special Pals animal shelter has invited Pastor Stephen Kelly of Covenant Lutheran Church to officiate our blessing ceremony at our facility (3830 Greenhouse Road, Houston, TX 77084). All socialized animals on a leash or in a pet carrier are welcome to attend this all-ages event.
Special Pals will also host an open house at this time to introduce Elizabeth Trick as the organization’s new Executive Director. Trick has been with the shelter since 2010 and transitioned into the leadership role in May of this year. “Special Pals is excited to put on this event for the community, and we look forward to meeting our fans and supporters one on one,” says Trick.
Guests can meet adoptable animals, staff members, and volunteers. Facility tours will be offered, as well as food and drinks (available for purchase), children’s activities, and a doggy kissing booth. New this year is our Dog Wash, powered by volunteers and lots of suds. Supplies and monetary donations will be accepted gladly but are not mandatory.
All proceeds raised from this event will be put toward operational costs and much-needed facility repairs. “Our shelter’s not the best-looking building on the street, but it’s filled with compassion and happiness,” says Meni Koulakiotis, part of the shelter’s administrative staff. The event will open to the public at 10 AM on October 5, with the Blessing of the Animals beginning at 10:30. The facility will remain open until 2 PM.
The shelter sits on three acres in West Houston, just three miles off of I-10. Generously donated by the late Billie Ray Broyles, the land and original building currently houses an average of 65 animals. With continued support from the community, Special Pals is able to contribute to the “no-kill” movement.
Our mission is to make a measurable and sustainable difference in the Greater Houston pet population by offering affordable pet care services, rescuing and rehabilitating homeless companion animals, finding forever homes, and providing education about responsible pet ownership. Special Pals is a no-kill, nonprofit animal shelter that relies on your donations to continue making an impact.
