Rover Oaks Pet Resort Raises $10k for War Dogs!

German Shepherd on a Flag BackdropA Huge Success for Operation: War Dogs

Rover Oaks Pet Resort recently held a month-long donation drive, Operation: War Dogs, to support the United States War Dogs Association, or USWDA. The drive began on Memorial Day and ended on July 11, 2014. This year, Rover Oaks raised a total of $10,210 for USWDA through Operation: War Dogs.

United States War Dogs Association is an organization of former and current military dog handlers and other individuals committed to promoting the long history of military service dogs, establishing permanent War Dog Memorials, and educating the public about the invaluable service of these canines to our country. Another main focus of their mission is providing the funds necessary to provide transportation to veteran War Dogs overseas to bring them back home to their adoptive families and new lives. The organization relies completely on donations, and 100% of money donated goes to the War Dogs.

During Operation: War Dogs, donations of $25 received a commemorative dog tag necklace or commemorative USWDA bandana, and donations of $100 received a free night of lodging at Rover Oaks Pet Resort. In addition, Rover Oaks decorated their facilities with patriotic paw prints presenting the names of the clients and community members who contributed to USWDA. These donations will help provide an abundance of critically needed items including K9 medications, food, grooming tools, bedding and other necessities.

“We were thrilled to raise over $10,000 for our nation’s War Dogs this year,” said Steve Smith, President of Rover Oaks Pet Resort. “The Houston and Katy communities have been overwhelmingly supportive and generous with Operation: War Dogs. We think this will be an effort that continues to grow for a long time to come.”

“When our Military first deployed our Military Working Dogs and their handlers to the Middle East, I promised myself that I would make sure that our Military Working Dogs and their handlers who were deployed would receive care packages, to let them know that there are people back in the states who care for them, wishing them well and for a safe return,” Said Ron Aiello, Vietnam War Veteran and President of USWDA. “In this way of giving them morale support, it gives them a better chance of survival and to return safely to their family and friends. There are thousands of individuals and hundreds of organizations and businesses who have been very generous and have made my promise become a reality. I am very grateful to them all.”

Military Working Dogs have been used by the U.S. Military since World War I. Dogs, along with their volunteer handlers, are trained in teams as scouts, trackers, sentry, mine/booby-trap/tunnel and water detection of hostile forces. Dogs have been used in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. Today all branches of our Armed Forces are utilizing Military Patrol Dogs specializing in drug and bomb/explosive detection. Currently, there are approximately 500-600 of these canines in the Middle East in such places as Kuwait, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, patrolling bases, military compounds, ammunition depots and military check points. They are guarding and protecting our military personnel as they were trained to do, with courage, loyalty and honor.
