Help Secure More Houston Greenspace
Elvis Asks for Your Support! By: Tina Sabuco, Abundance Retreat
Hi! My name is Elvis. I love my home in Houston. I mostly love visiting Houston’s beautiful parks, walking with my parents and brothers in the wide open spaces. It’s a grand adventure to chase butterflies in the tall grasses of Terry Hershey Park and to marvel at the fish, turtles and egrets as we kayak Buffalo Bayou. My favorite past time is to nap in the sun along the banks of White Oak Bayou with my brothers. This is me along the bayou’s banks last Spring.
But I and my pup friends wish we had more green spaces in Houston to enjoy, and that my parents and their friends had more safe places to bike. Here’s where you can help. There is an opportunity on the table today for Houston to fully embrace our bayous as a valuable asset for the City; expand and improve our park space; and transform Houston for generations to come. Parks By You is an initiative that seeks to connect 7 bayous across Houston with green spaces and trails, as well as improve existing local parks. This initiative will add 2000 acres of green space along the bayous all over Houston and bring the total walking/running/biking/playing trails along the bayous to over 150 miles. This system will connect one end of Houston to the other, will connect neighborhoods, and will connect people and pups – all by connecting our bayous.
The total cost connecting the 7 Houston bayous is $205 million. $105 million will come from state, federal and private sector funds. $100 million will come from a proposed $166 million bond initiative known as Proposition B on the November 6 ballot. The other $66M of the bond proposal has been allocated to improving local community parks. In total, that’s a $271 million to transform Houston’s future – today. Notably, this will require NO tax rate increase.
The benefits to this proposal are many, including: helping with flood control; replacing cars with bikes by connecting one end of the city to the other through a system of safe and beautiful trails; promoting a healthier and more active lifestyle for we pups, our parents, and children; and helping make Houston a greener city. Most importantly, it makes Houston a better place to live, and a more attractive place for businesses and workers who may want to come here. With an annual return on investment of over $70 million per year, Parks By You will more than pay for itself in a few short years.
