It's that time of year again! VOTE (click here) for your favorite pet business in Houston. Yes, we have many to choose from so this is no task for scaredy cats! Got a favorite groomer that knows just how to snip and clip? Or maybe your veterinarian has just the right “bed-side” manner…I know mine does! Winners will be announced in HPT’s annual Reliant Dog Show Issue in July.
Vote early and vote often! Multiple votes, coercion, voter fraud and bribes are all encouraged. (Remember, chocolate dipped anything will get you everywhere).
Don't see your fave business? With space limitations, I couldn't possibly list every deserving choice, but I made sure to enter our sponsors (capitalism lives!). But you can enter your own response at the end of each question.

BEST TRAINER and human being of all time !!!!!
Jim Burwell is easily the best trainer in Houston. He loves dogs, is friendly, and his methods work! He truly deserves recognition as the best dog trainer in town.
JIM BURWELL’S PETIQUETTE
Jim Burwell saved our out-of-control puppy from our ignorance. He rewarded us with a fantastic canine family member. Jim has a phenomenal ability to read dogs and gently shape their behavior. Best of all, he is a talented teacher, helping the average dog owner learn to work with his or her own dog as well. Jim understands pack mentality, canine/primate communication, and the mystical ways dogs make us better humans. It is a joy to learn from him, and he is a gift to our community.
Jim Burwell is really “THE DOG WHISPERER” of Houston! He did a beautiful job training our dog, “Maggie” and US!!!! If we do exactly as he told us, our “Maggie” has the most thoughtful manners imaginable. He is a fine professional with a special gift with pets.
Jim Burwell is a great dog trainer. He helped us with our puppy and was amazing to watch. We felt very fortunate to have had his expertise and great suggestions for having a well-balanced dog integrated into our family.
Jim Burwell helped me when I first adopted my golden retriever and I am very grateful that he was recommended to me.
I’ve used several dog trainers in my lifetime, but I’ve never run across a dog trainer as good as Jim Burwell. During the initial training sessions with my Boxer, Jim tought my wife and I how to train our dog with ease. He’s the only dog trainer that I would use!
We adopted what we thought was a sweet lab, but she turned out to give Marley (you have to see this movie!) a good run for his money. We called in Jim Burwell for help and he put on the right path. Now we can honestly call her a sweet, well disciplined dog.
Jim Burwell definately has my vote for the BEST trainer in Texas, I’ve always had Cocker Spaniels and knew the breed for being both sweet highly intelligent but just a bit crazy at times (something I thought was normal for the breed so I accepted it). Jim Burwell taught ME that it has nothing to do with the ‘breed’ of the dog but the ‘thought behavior’ of the pet owner, if your doggie is having any behavior problems there is always a reason behind it and it’s up to the owner to change THEIR behavior. Our dog Kaycee was already two years old and I thought she was long past any REAL behavior training and that we’d just have to learn to put up with her quirks, when one of those ‘quirks’ happened to include snapping at our two grandbabies we thought we would have to get rid of our ‘furbaby’. Jim Burwell showed us that the REAL teaching began with my family and then the grandbabies, then we taught Kaycee where her place in the family is and now we are one great big loving happy family…fur and human babies included. Love you Jim !!

Jack Richards worked miracles with my rescued Weimaraner. He eliminated her aggressive behavior in a humane manner and returned a sweet, loving family member. Jack also took time to improve my ability to handle and interact with dogs. The facility is animal friendly and conducive to learning for dogs and their owners. Jack goes a step further by providing training sessions in public locations to ease that transition from Privileged Pets to home. This was a 100% positive and successful experience. I highly recommend Jack Richards.
Jack, Thanks so much for your help with the training of my Rusty. You helped me to understand the training process, which is exactly what I wished to be able to do. What a great day when dog & owner accomplish so much!
Jack didn’t realize when we were training Molly and then Gracie a year later that our visiting during training would save Gracie’s life. Sat. night (around midnight) Gracie found a rat bait outside and ingested part of it. Jack had told me when they work with police dogs they always carry peroxide in their kits. If the narcotic dog should break through a bag they find you have to make sure none goes into their system. You squirt the peroxide down their throat, everything in their stomach will come up, and then you follow through with water. The vet added an hour after the peroxide give them a piece of bread. Three days later there was sunshine so Molly, Gracie and Judy went to walk in the park thanks to what I learned from Jack. I cannot begin to thank Jack enough!!!
Just wanted to say that because of training we received from Jack shortly after we got our dog, we have a wonderfully behaved pet. It is so cool to use hand signals to get her to sit, stay & lie down. Even after we moved out of state, Jack has answered questions & made suggestions about “little things” that have cropped up with our dog. I highly recommend him.
I am currently a dog handler for the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, thanks to Jack Richards. In June of 2003 he donated a Labrador Retriever to the department which he trained for narcotic detection work. In a relatively short time the dog had found several large quanities of narcotics and cash. He has been a terrific addition to the department. Jack also trains with us on a regular basis to help maintain the proficiency of our unit. Many thanks to Jack, his wife Fiona and Privileged Pets.
My husband and I brought our four month old Welsh Corgi to Priviledged Pets to address aggressive tendencies. Because our dog bit so hard and so often when picked up, I was reduced to wearing oven mitts for protection. After our Corgi, my husband and I attended six lessons with Jack Richards, we now have a pet that is a joy to have around. Jack trains dogs effectively and humanely. We were so impressed by his genuine concern for our pet and the others in his care, that we entrusted Jack and Fiona to kennel our Corgi. Brody came back healthy and even more well-behaved than when we left him.
My husband and I were lucky enough to have been referred to Privileged Pets for dog training. After another trainer urged us to have our 1 yr old Stafforshire Terrier (Daisy) put to sleep because she was a fear biter we decided to get a second opinion. Thank God we did, come to find out, she was biting out of fear, but Jack is teaching us why and what to do about it. He has taught us to build confidence and discipline in her. You would not believe the change in just 2 lessons, I can’t wait to see what she and I are going to learn in the coming weeks. Thank you Jack, you truly are a life saver!
I have used ABC Pet Resort and Spa for numerous things numerous times and I love going there. Everyone is so nice and u can tell they really love the animals.
Houston Dog Ranch is great!! I would like it if I could stay there.
Houston Dog Ranch is the greatest day care for my dog. When he sees the bus coming in the gate to get him, he starts going in circles. He can’t wait to get on that bus and see his friends. When he returns home in the afternoon, he is one happy and tired dog.
He loves it when we go out of town now because he gets to stay in the Dog Ranch cabins.
One other note is that my Maltese always looked a little shabby, even when coming from the groomer. Well, that has certainly changed since the Dog Ranch found their great groomer. Bailey now looks as beautiful and fluffy as his friend Lucy. The most amazing part is that he looks great for so long.
