How many of you have resolved to get more excercise this year?  What about your dog?  Is possible that you both need more excercise this year?  Dogs are the greatest excercise partners you will ever find.  They are never too tired, they never complain, and they are always ready to go.

It is absolutely true that a tired dog is a happy dog.  If you are having behavior issues with your dog, chances are she is not getting enough exercise.  Unfortunately, just putting them in the backyard doesn’t count.  Dogs are social animals and they want to be with their pack.  How many times have you put your dog in the backyard and witnessed her exercising herself?  How many times have you put your dog in the backyard and witnessed her standing at the back door looking for you? My guess is that nine times out of ten, it has been the latter.

Dogs are nomads by nature.  They live for the walk and they need to get out and stimulate their senses.  If we deny them this, we are going against mother nature and our dogs will become unbalanced.  That goes for all dogs and all breeds, from the tallest Great Dane to the teeniest Chihuahua.  And besides, what’s good for them is good for us!  There are so many ways you and your dog can exercise together.  Walking, jogging, biking, skating, swimming… I have even been known to get on the treadmill with my Jack Russel Terrier.

And of course, there are other options for the days when you just simply run out of time or when it is too hot, cold, or rainy!  Urban Tails in mid-town has created a kind of indoor dog park, complete with indoor pool.  It is really a win-win set up.  Your dog gets exercise, you get to play with your dog, your dog gets to play with other dogs, and of course there is the swimming (if your dog is so inclined!).  They call it the Bow Wow Beach Club and it is offered from 7-9 PM (Tue-Fri), 2-4PM (Sat), and 9-11AM (Sun).  My dogs and I are there every Thursday, playing and training!  They do require a membership fee for the Beach Club and you can click here for more information.

So, now there are no excuses!  Get out there and move your bodies and have some fun with your pooch.  Just a little bit every day will make a world of difference for you and your dog.

Send me some pics of you exercising with your dogs.  I will post them here and the best pics will receive a free pass to the Bow Wow Beach Club!
