My name is Marina Johnson. Some people know me as the owner of Marina’s Maine Coons cattery, located outside of Pearland TX. As a Maine Coon breeder, I get a lot of questions like “What is it that makes Maine Coons so distinctive in relation to other cat breeds?   What makes them such good house pets and quite possibly the most patriotic cat any American can own?

Origin

For starters, let’s look at where the breed got its start. As their inconspicuous moniker denotes, the breed originated in the state of Maine, where it is the official state cat.  In fact, it is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America.  It is thought that the breed was a byproduct of sailors, who would bring cats along with them on their seafaring voyages.  Upon arrival, the cats from overseas took a little shore leave, sought out a little company, and voila, the Maine Coon was created.

Appearance

As far as aesthetics go, many would argue that Maine Coons are very pleasing to the eye.  Maine Coons are known for their size, their large pointed ears and their long, silky fur coat.  Maine Coons are one of the largest breeds of domesticated cat.  The males tend to grow larger than their female counterparts, but it is not uncommon for either one to exceed 12 lbs in weight.  Often, the fur grows in thicker on their undercoat giving them the appearance of a wild animal.  Speaking of their fur, Maine Coons can come with several different colors and color patterns.  Whether you want a Black Smoke pattern, a tabby that is black/brown/white mixed, or a cat with a solid Blue coat, the Maine Coon is a breed that is ready to please.  Also, remember when I said that the Maine Coon cat might possibly be the most patriotic cat?  That is because the Maine Coon cat is considered the only longhair breed native to the United States of America.

Personality

Despite being one of the largest breeds of domesticated cat, the Maine Coon is very relaxed and laid-back.  These two facts, when taken into consideration together, have earned the breed the nickname “Gentle Giant”.  They are cats that interact very well with people:  so well in fact that they are often compared to dogs more so than other cat breeds.  One thing to take into consideration is that Maine Coons are playful and need exercise, so it is a good idea to buy a cat tree and cat toys if you intend to add one to your family.  Overall, they are a very, fun-loving breed that will add a splash of playfulness, silliness and contentment to any home.
