Linda Woodward likes to buy nice things for her multiple dogs and doesn’t mind spending serious money on them. She does however, email Pet Stuff Resale first to see if what she wants is available there. Equally as often, Janet Huey, the owner, will email a picture of something to see if it is something Linda would like. “Janet has been to my home several times, so she knows how we live and what my taste is that is service I don’t get any where else. What other pet business would email me a picture of a youth bed that my dog Micah now loves? I am always on the lookout in thrift stores and other resale shops for “human” items that pets can use”, states Janet.
The delight on peoples faces as well as saving them money really makes my job a lot of fun. That job is Pet Stuff Resale, where Janet buys and sells new and used pet supplies in the Houston area.”I see people writing down my number from my truck sign and stopping me at lights. I keep brochures on my dashboard just for that!”
Houston is not only a huge city but an extremely intensive pet market so big enough for this one person business. She had to structure the business in such a way that she keeps having fun, which meant deleting as much administrative work as possible, hence there is no Ebay, no shipping, no storefront, no credit cards. Janet observes, “I have done rescue for so long in Houston, most of my business is by referral; with no brick/mortar location, I try to accommodate clients by delivering whenever possible. I also sell on weekends in front of the Great Good in West Houston. I am available by phone or email 7 days a week. I ask questions about a clients needs so they are getting the appropriate items for their pet or even an appropriate pet. There are not many college students or 80 year olds that need a puppy, so I sometimes gently try to steer a client toward a better choice. My goals were and remain, to save people money and keep stuff out of landfills. With all of the parts I can match up and recycle, I have kept thousands of pounds of “trash” from taking up landfill space and make regular trips to metal recycling places. I have been “green” a long time.”
Pet Stuff Resale is unique in several ways:
1. All items are disinfected.
2. People can trade in items for other things and it doesn’t even have to be in the same animal category.
3. With 23 years in rescue Janet provides information on a variety of pet services. Need a vet particularly knowledgeable about Brittnies? Have sugar gliders? Need a vet how has an endoscope? Need a groomer in your area? Pet Stuff Resale can help with all of that as well.
“I am very excited about adding new and used cat trees to my inventory; as well as very sturdy dog steps. I located a local craftsman, so they are custom made and I am helping keep the Houston economy revolving. If clients send me a picture of their pet on a tree or in a crate, I will post it on my blog!”
