IT’S OPEN BARN DAY AT THE HOUSTON SPCA
AND WE NEED “EWE”

Horses, donkeys, sheep and goats… OH MY!  The big red barn doors at the Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, will swing wide open on Saturday, August 27th from 10 am to 5 pm for yet another “Open Barn Day!”   The Houston SPCA has horses, donkeys, sheep, goats and other farm animals, and they are ready to head home with ”ewe”.   Charlie is a nine-year-old blind quarter horse that has been in our care for the last two months.  He is as sweet as can be and would make a great family friend to just about anyone. Veterinarians are not sure what caused his blindness, but he is very healthy and gets along with other horses.

Click on the link to see a video of Marty who is sure to make you laugh. She is a playful three-year-old quarter horse that loves to be bathed and play in the water.  Marty arrived at the Houston SPCA three months ago after being rescued from a very cruel situation. She was severely emaciated and needed the help of our caring veterinarians and barn team to get her back on track.  Since then, she has put on over 100 pounds, and her personality now shines!

You can make a difference in the lives of all of these animals by opening your heart and giving them a permanent, loving home today. Thanks to our Open Barn Days, over 70 horses and farm animals have found permanent, loving homes.  Many of these homeless animals have been rescued from cruel situations or surrendered to us by their former owners.

The Houston SPCA’s monthly Open Barn Days allow approved adopters to visit with a number of horses and farm animals without having to set an appointment.  Make sure to fill out the equine and farm animal application from our website at www.houstonspca.org, and submit it back to us.  In addition, all horses and donkeys up for adoption will be vaccinated and have current Coggins tests and dewormings, and all male horses and donkeys will be gelded.

Here are a few other guidelines to follow if you are interested in attending the Open Barn Day.

  • Log onto www.houstonspca.org, fill-out the equine and farm animal applicationand submit it online to the Houston SPCA.
  • Make sure to provide proof of residence and / or a lease agreement from your landlord.

The cost of farm animals at the Houston SPCA is as follows:

  • Horses range from $100 to $400 based on age, health and temperament.
  • Sheep and goats are individually priced.
  • Donkeys are individually priced.

Volunteers and staff from the Houston SPCA will be on-hand with detailed information such as age, description, personality and knowledge of each and every farm animal on the grounds.  In order to accommodate all of our adopters, arrangements for all animal pick-ups will be scheduled for the following week.  We look forward to our monthly Open Barn Days so that our homeless horses and farm animals will be able to find a loving place to call their forever home.
